FOSTER, ADOPTIVE, BIOLOGICAL PARENTS INITIATIVE

The Milwaukee LGBT Community Center wishes to conduct a pilot project that will measure the success of providing parenting training and capacity building to foster, adoptive (FA) and biological parents (B), both LGBT and heterosexual, in a community center setting. In a survey conducted by the Community Center and Children’s Service Society of Wisconsin in 2007, potential LGBT FA parents cited mistrust of the child welfare system as one of the key barriers to becoming a FA parent. They are concerned about being discriminated against based on sexual orientation and/or gender identify. Heterosexual foster parents with LGBT foster youth and biological LGBT parents may share the concern of discrimination as it pertains to the youth in their home. For these reasons, a parent program located at the Milwaukee LGBT Community Center will engender trust and confidence in potential LGBT parents and heterosexual FA parents. These parents will feel confident they are being treated with respect in a safe and inclusive environment. In addition, they will trust the parent education and training received will include LGBT information that is accurate and useful.

RELATIONSHIP SEMINARS FOR FOSTER, ADOPTIVE AND BIOLOGICAL LGBT PARENTS

In partnership with Adoption Resources of Wisconsin, the Center is conducting six week seminars on the impact fostering, adopting or birthing children has on relationships. The seminar prepares prospective parents for children coming into the family and helps parents who already have children to focus on the importance of keeping their relationship healthy.
